In recent years, as a rising discipline, ankle surgery has become more and more popular, not only in foreign respected but also began to attach importance in China.

Before the 1980s, our country orthopedics old-timers, in the Poliomyelitis Sequela Foot and ankle deformity correction and the treatment of trauma has made remarkable achievements, has received the world’s praise. Before the 1980s, there were a large number of patients with poliomyelitis sequelae, which objectively promoted the development of Orthopedic Treatment for lower limbs and foot and ankle deformities, and gradually formed a treatment with Chinese characteristics, with very good results, won Praise from the World Health Organization.

Internationally, science and technology developed countries began decades ago on foot disease research. In China, the major of foot and ankle has not been paid enough attention in general. There are some problems in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle diseases such as flat foot, Hallux Valgus, and forefoot pain. Compared with foreign countries, the level of knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment of these diseases is nearly 40 years behind.

In 1980, the establishment of the orthopedics branch of the Chinese Medical Association marked that the orthopedics specialty in China has become an independent discipline from the major surgery.  Foot and ankle surgery is included in orthopedics specialty, which has played a positive role in the development of foot and ankle surgery.

In March 1980, the first Chinese-western Medicine Conference on foot injury was held in Liuzhou, Guangxi. This is the first national academic conference in the field of foot and ankle surgery in China, which marks the beginning of an independent academic exchange in the sub-specialty of foot and ankle surgery in China.

In December 1986, Professor Ling Jiaxiang’s translation of the Journal of foot surgery, edited by Ryohei Suzuki of Japan, opened the door to modern foot and ankle surgery, so that Chinese orthopedics doctors can understand and learn the foreign modern foot and ankle surgery professional progress.

In May 1987, Professor Jiang Zhijie and Professor Gu Xiangjie of Shanghai Huashan Hospital established the first ankle surgery clinic in China, which is the symbol of the establishment of the ankle surgery entity in China.

The above process showed exactly the development of modern foot and ankle surgery.

Introduction and study of Foreign Modern Foot and ankle surgery knowledge. Professor Chen Baoxing introduced the new concept, new knowledge, and new technology of modern ankle surgery for our country.

In 1992, Professor Mao bin-Yao published the landmark “foot surgery”, which is the first monograph of foot surgery in China It has promoted the development of foot and Ankle Surgery Specialty in China.

Setting Up Study Group: On June 19, 1992, the foot surgery group under the orthopedics branch was formally established.

The name of the foot surgery group was changed to “foot and Ankle Surgery Group” on April 26, 1997, in order to facilitate the academic exchange and cooperation with international standards.

At the same time，Academic exchanges and professional training are actively carried out by the Academic Group.

The establishment of the Study Group marks the beginning of a new stage of modern foot and ankle surgery in China, which has greatly promoted the development of foot and ankle surgery in China.

The group organized 17 national academic conferences, which contributed a lot to the development of the specialty of ankle surgery in China.

The Training Center for foot and Ankle Surgeons shall be set up, and the members of each school shall be encouraged to organize various training courses

In order to improve the professional level of Foot and Ankle Surgery, the study group actively organized international academic exchanges in order to learn foreign modern foot and ankle surgery theory and advanced technology.

In March 2000, the foot and Ankle Surgery Specialty Group was established, and the foot and ankle surgery specialty outpatient clinic and foot and ankle surgery ward were established.

These returning professors have made great contributions to the development of foot and ankle surgery in China.

Foreign experts were invited to give special lectures in China, and 17 training courses were organized for foreign experts to demonstrate and explain the operation.

 

Looking back on the development of ankle surgery in China in the past 30 years, we would like to express our deep sorrow for the late pioneer and founder of modern ankle surgery! To our ankle surgery for the cause of the contribution of the old leaders, old experts to express heartfelt respect! I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all my colleagues who have contributed to the development of foot and ankle surgery in China!

Although at the technical level, we have approached the world advanced level in some fields and areas, from the overall point of view, the foot and ankle surgery in China is still in the popularization and development stage. At present, there are two imbalances in the field of foot and ankle surgery in China: one is the imbalance between different regions of the country, the other is the imbalance within regions. The foot and Ankle Surgery Group of our orthopedics branch should continue its efforts to promote the balanced development of all regions of the country, and the foot and Ankle Surgery Group of all provinces and autonomous regions should actively promote the balanced development of their own regions. In order to improve the level of ankle surgery in China, the idea and technology of modern ankle surgery in developed countries should be introduced. To keep pace with the times and keep innovating, we should not only catch up in an all-round way but also have the courage to surpass the international advanced level.

I wish China’s ankle surgery cause of continuous innovation, to become an “ankle surgery” power. All Ankle surgeons are expected to work hard to realize this dream. I believe with our efforts foot and ankle correction technology will be better and better.
